The temple located on Rameswaram island, Tamil Nadu named as Ramanathaswamy temple is one of the most holiest place as it is one of the twelve Jyotirlanga temples in India. This Hindu temple has the longest corridor among all other Hindu temples in India. The history of the temple is linked to Lord Ramas journey of rescuing Devi Sita from Ravana. As per the legend, Lord Rama started his journey from Rameshwaram to rescue Sita. Later, Lord Hanuman bought a lingam from Kailasha and Lord Rama installed the Shiva lingam after he killed Ravana and thus worshipped Lord Shiva as a penance for Brahmahatya. This is the Viswalingam which is worshipped in the temple. There is another lingam Ramalingam which is said to be installed by Devi Sita. Thus, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is named as Ramanathaswamy temple which literally means the Master of Rama.
The annual festivals celebrated in the temple are Mahashivarathri, Adi Ramalinga Prathista, Adi Thirukalayanam and floating festival. The temple is ideal for a visit all round the year and attracts millions of devotees.
